July 23, 2007And yet another obligatory Harry Potter post…
As some of you may have noticed, I virtually dropped off the face of the internet this past weekend, and yes–it's all because of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book of the popular series.
Saturday morning I finished the reading the final chapters of Half-Blood Prince, which I read every night, starting Wednesday last week, after coming home from work. Then I went to Power Books Megamall to buy myself a copy of Deathly Hallows, after which I met up with KC to grab some lunch before he went to bowling class. After that I bought some grocery items, and then, finally, headed back home. Because I spent most of Saturday afternoon sleeping, plus the fact that I tend to read books slowly and repeat paragraphs more than once (sometimes because I feel like I've spaced out while reading or something), I only got to finish about a third of the book.
The next day, I practically spent the entire day reading. That is, if I weren't taking a bath, eating, or taking a few hours nap. I managed to finish the book between midnight and 1am Monday. (Yeah, I told you I'm really slow. XD)
Anyway, random thoughts about the book. (Finally.)
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
1. I thoroughly enjoyed it! The first few chapters were kind of slow but once the book picked up in later chapters, OH EM GEE. One revelation after the other… wow! It felt as if I just went up a hundred flights of stairs!
2. The deaths! I don't think I've ever cried for a character before. No, I didn't cry for Fred, but I did for Dobby! "Here lies Dobby, a free elf." *bawls!* Jo Rowling was just murderous in this one. 50+ dead! Plus an owl! Poor Hedwig.
3. Ron punching Draco. Ah, priceless. Gotta love it.
4. Ron finally landing a wet one on Hermione! In front of Harry, no less! HAHA! That was a treat.
5. So… Snape. Tragic hero or pure evil? Tragic hero! Well, okay. Fine. As it turned out, he was foolishly in love with Lily and then he had always cared for Harry, played double agent for Dumbledore and Voldemort (Taboo!), and in the end, got himself killed, but not without making eye sex with Harry's Lily-eyes first. Hmm. But you've got to give the guy more than just props. I mean, he's kind of like the unsung hero, isn't he? Ah, well. He got the second name mention in the epilogue, right? "Albus Severus". Poor kid.
6. Epilogue! 10++ on the keso scale. Taena. Hahaha! Sorry, can't help it. It's probably the worst part of the book for me. It just didn't mesh well with the rest of the book. But then again, KC said most epilogues are cheesy and maybe it was a particularly cheesy day when JKR wrote the epilogue years ago. XD Bookworms? Any thoughts?
7. Neville! He really matured in this one. Leader of D.A., going against the Carrows, killing Nagini! Ooh, respect.
8. You know, I'm kind of liking the Harry/Luna ship. Dean/Luna was sorta out of left field, no? Harry/Ginny, though… Boring. Even as parents they seemed boring… Daddy Ron, FTW!
9. That graveyard scene at Godric's Hollow was just… *sniff* And the memorial for the Potters, their old house left as it was and the messages the folks left for Harry, that was touching.
10. Harry survived the Killing Curse twice now, right? What a "magical little boy". XD
*END OF SPOILERS*
There's lots more to talk about this fantastic book, but I'm afraid I'm getting lazy now and I kinda want to hit the sack early tonight. So that's it. Goonight!
